You can wear these chunky Y2K boots all season long.

Looking for the most over-the-top boot to keep you warm for the months to come? Look no further. This winter, celebrities are pleading for a classic shoe relic of the year 2000: the Moon Boots.

As with Uggs and Doc Martens, GCDS Moon Boots immediately conjures up an image of the shoe it’s best known for: an ultra-laced, heavily branded, oversized AF boot. With the current fashion revival at the start of the year, the return of the Moon Boot – a cold-weather year 2000 staple – is more fitting than ever.

In a recent Victoria’s Secret campaign, Hailey Bieber was photographed against the backdrop of a snow-capped mountain in her underwear and a pair of chunky pink Moon Boots. This chic (albeit impractical) outfit combo seems to be the look of the season.

And to celebrate the holidays, Dua Lipa also donned a pair of Hello Kitty Moon Boots – as part of Sanrio’s collaboration with GCDS – in one of its famous IG photo dumps. In a few shots, she’s wearing the boots with nothing but a bikini.

Sensation of a theme? Moon boots are The clothe. Little clothing is needed when these shoes are pictured.

Created during the space age of the 1960s, the Moon Boots are inspired by the shape of astronaut anti-gravity boots during the Apollo 11 moon landing mission.

This inspiration was a boot with a thick, waterproof sole, ideal for harsh weather conditions. Made by Italian entrepreneur Giancarlo Zanatta, the boots have been specially designed to provide solid grip and insulation when walking in snow. But over time, they have become less functional than fashion.

In the early 2000s, the shoes resurfaced as a staple of the retro-futuristic style worn by Y2K style influencers, and the shoe’s bulky construction did not deter it-girls of the day like Paris Hilton from slip on a pair of Moon Boots with nothing but a T-shirt or light jacket.

Naturally, this trend continues today with the aforementioned looks from Bieber and Lipa. In addition to the bikini photo ops, the Moon Boots can be dressed up.

Mariah Carey – another Y2K style icon – shared photos strutting through the snow in a pair of white boots, complete with all-over glamor, a gold cocktail dress and a white cape (it’s a look no one else can wear the way they can).

Since its rise from space travel to the coveted footwear, the Moon Boot has been criticized that its design is not unconventional but in fact quite simply … ugly. Even still, the cult of the boot is stronger than ever as it stays true to its original iconic design.

Once designed for function, the Moon Boot has become a pleasantly absurd style choice. We need more in 2022.
