The perfect jacket doesn’t exist–

There aren’t many things that get me excited about enduring a long, cold winter, but a Penny Lane coat is one of them.

The cozy garment, with its signature fur cuffs and cuffs, has long been a staple of winter style. First invented in Afghanistan circa 1920s, it became known as the Afghan coat. By the late 1960s, the garment was a hallmark of the Western hippie fashion scene.

But we have the comedy-drama of 2000 almost known, starring Kate Hudson as Penny Lane, to thank for solidifying the mantle as a 2000 favorite.

Cameron Crowe’s film follows protagonist William Miller (Patrick Fugit), an aspiring music journalist who embarks on a tour with an up-and-coming rock band in the 1970s. There he meets Lane, who, along with his friends, are the artistic muses of performers – not groupies, Bandages.

Lane is mysterious, confident, and powerful, and this is best embodied by the fur-trimmed coat she wears. Her effortlessly cool style epitomizes the rock and roll era of the 70s with influences from the early 2000s, and her coat remains an icon of those fashion eras.

The film’s costume designer, Betsy Heimann, Recount She in 2014, “This cloak is his armour; this mantle is his protection; and when she puts on this coat, she is enveloped in her cocoon of glamorous and marvelous dressings. TBH is how I feel when I wear mine.

In line with other revivals of 70s and 2000s trends, adoration for the Penny Lane coat took off ICT Tac and Instagram. Just this week he was spotted on celebrities like Lana Del Rey and Bella Hadid.

Although it might not seem like it at first glance, the Penny Lane coat is a versatile garment that can be worn as a centerpiece or to elevate your look.

The coat’s playful and impractical details align with today’s carefree fashion and creative personal style. It’s impossible not to look good in one of these trendy jackets. When it comes to styling the coat, to quote Penny Lane herself, “Never take it seriously.”

As certifiable vintage gold, Penny Lane coats can often be found through second-hand retailers, such as your local thrift store or an online platform like Depop. Don’t feel like bargain hunting? We have what you need.
